Strapi is an open-source headless CMS, and Strapi Cloud is its managed hosting. The pricing has two features worth understanding before you choose a tier: it is charged per project, and its overage rates are priced low enough that exceeding your allowance is often cheaper than upgrading.

What is Strapi?
Strapi is a headless CMS: it manages content and exposes it over an API, leaving the front end to you. Strapi Cloud is the vendor-hosted version, priced per project by API requests, storage and bandwidth.
Because the core is open source, self-hosting is a genuine alternative — which makes Strapi Cloud's pricing a convenience decision rather than an access one.
Strapi's key features
1. Open-source core
You are not locked into Strapi Cloud to use Strapi. That materially reduces platform risk: if the hosting pricing stops working for you, the software still runs on your own infrastructure.
2. Published overage rates
Strapi publishes what exceeding your allowance costs: $1.50 per 25,000 additional API requests, $0.60 per additional GB of storage, and $30 per additional 100 GB of bandwidth. Publishing overage rates at all is better practice than most of the platforms in this review series.
3. Usage-based tiers
Starter includes 100,000 API requests and 50 GB of storage; Pro 1 million and 250 GB; Business 10 million and 1,000 GB.
4. Environments on Business
Two environments — typically staging and production — require the Business tier.
5. An SLA on Business
99.9% uptime is committed at the Business level.
Strapi pros
Overage is cheap relative to upgrading — and that is genuinely useful
Here is the maths. Starter is $35 for 100,000 requests, which is $0.35 per thousand. Overage is $1.50 per 25,000, which is $0.06 per thousand — roughly six times cheaper per unit than the included allowance.
Practically: if you need 200,000 requests, Starter plus overage is $35 + $6 = $41, against $90 for Pro. Starter-plus-overage stays cheaper until you approach Pro's own 1 million allowance, at which point the tiers converge. So the overage rate is not a penalty — it is a flexible extension, and worth using deliberately.
Open source means a real exit
You can leave Strapi Cloud without leaving Strapi. Few managed platforms in this series offer that.
Transparent limits
Requests, storage and bandwidth are all published with numbers. You can model your cost before committing — which is more than can be said for the credit-metered tools elsewhere in this series.
A reasonable annual discount
Up to 17% is fair for the category.
Strapi Cloud cons and limitations
Pricing is per project
Each project carries its own plan. Three projects on Starter is $105 a month, not $35.
Who it affects: agencies and teams running several content-backed sites. What to do: count projects first. If you run many, self-hosting may be substantially cheaper — and is available, because the core is open source.
The Pro-to-Business step is large
$90 to $450 is a fivefold increase. If you need Business only for a second environment or the SLA rather than for 10 million requests, you are paying a great deal for those specific features.
What to do: check whether a second environment can be self-hosted alongside a Pro production project, which may be cheaper than the Business tier.
Staging requires the top tier
Two environments on Business only means the standard practice of having a staging environment is gated behind the $450 plan. That is a notable restriction for a developer-focused product.

The Cloud pricing page does not set out the licensing terms or feature differences for the self-hosted CMS. If self-hosting is your plan, check Strapi's own documentation rather than inferring from the Cloud tiers — we did not verify which features are Community versus Enterprise.

For an open-source project, GitHub activity and community discussion are often more informative than review-site averages — worth looking at alongside G2 if you evaluate further.

A worked example. A site making 400,000 requests a month: Starter plus 300,000 overage requests is $35 + $18 = $53, against $90 for Pro. Starter wins. At 900,000 requests, Starter plus overage is $35 + $48 = $83 — still under Pro. Above roughly 1 million, Pro's allowance takes over. The crossover sits almost exactly at Pro's included limit, which is sensible pricing, but it means you should not upgrade early out of caution.
Jet Admin vs. Strapi: which should you evaluate?
These are different tools. Strapi manages content and serves it over an API; Jet Admin builds the interfaces your team uses to work with data.

When Strapi is the better choice
If you need a content API, Strapi is the right category of tool and Jet Admin does not replace it. The open-source core also gives you an exit that most managed platforms — ours included — cannot match. Many teams run both: Strapi for content, an internal tool for operations.
Who should use Strapi — and who should compare alternatives?
Good fit: teams needing a headless CMS; developers who value an open-source core and the option to self-host; single-project deployments where per-project pricing is not a problem; teams whose request volumes sit comfortably inside Starter plus overage.
Compare alternatives if: you run many projects and per-project pricing multiplies; you need staging without the $450 tier; or what you actually need is an internal tool rather than a content API.
