n8n Review 2026: Features, Pros, and Cons

Reviewed September 26, 2026. This is a research-based review of n8n's official pricing and documentation plus published customer feedback — not a hands-on benchmark. Jet Admin publishes this comparison; n8n is an automation engine rather than a direct competitor, and this review treats it as such.

n8n is worth considering when you have technically comfortable people and workflows too complex or too high-volume for step-metered automation tools. Its strongest advantage is the billing unit: one execution per workflow run, no matter how many steps it contains. The trade-off is a learning curve reviewers describe as steep, and — if you self-host — real operational ownership.

This review covers how n8n differs structurally from its competitors, what reviewers report, current pricing, and where it sits alongside an application platform.

n8n review: the quick verdict

n8n suits developers, technical operators and teams willing to earn the control it offers. It is a weaker fit for non-technical users looking for their first automation tool, where a simpler product will produce results faster.

What is n8n?

n8n is a workflow automation platform. You build workflows visually from nodes — triggers, actions, conditions, code — and run them on n8n Cloud or on your own infrastructure.

The structural distinction that defines it: an execution is a single run of your entire workflow, and it does not matter how many steps the workflow contains or how much data it processes. A twenty-step workflow and a two-step workflow cost exactly the same per run.

That single rule is why n8n appeals to people who have found step-metered tools expensive, and it shapes every other trade-off in this review.

n8n's key features

1. Execution-based billing that ignores complexity

Because complexity is free, there is no billing reason to consolidate steps, avoid a branch, or simplify logic to save money. Reviewers contrast this directly with tools that charge for every action a workflow executes.

The corollary is that frequency is what costs you. A workflow scheduled every five minutes instead of hourly costs twelve times as much for identical output — which makes schedule review the cheapest optimisation available on this platform.

2. Self-hosting with the full feature set

The Community Edition is free to self-host and carries no vendor execution limit. Reviewers note it includes the features and unlimited executions, with your cost being server hosting — commonly cited in the $20–$50 per month range.

Scope this carefully: free software is not free operation, a point the limitations section returns to.

3. Around 1,900 integrations, plus code when you need it

n8n's integration directory lists more than 1,900 connectors, and you can drop into code nodes where no connector exists. For teams whose stack includes something niche, that combination is the practical reason to choose it.

4. Unlimited users on paid cloud plans

Paid cloud plans include unlimited users, so adding colleagues does not change the subscription. Among automation tools — where seat-based pricing is common — this is a meaningful commercial difference.

5. Governance features on the higher tiers

Business adds SSO with SAML and LDAP, Git version control and separate environments. These are the features that make workflows maintainable when they become business-critical, and they are the real reason to move up rather than execution volume.

n8n pros

The billing model genuinely favours complex work

If your workflows are intricate, n8n is structurally cheaper than step-metered alternatives, and not marginally so. A ten-step workflow run a thousand times is 1,000 executions here and 10,000 billable steps elsewhere.

Self-hosting removes vendor limits entirely

For teams with infrastructure capability or data-residency requirements, running n8n yourself gives unlimited executions and full feature access for the cost of a server. Very few commercial tools offer that, and it is a legitimate reason to choose n8n on principle.

Power users rate it highly

4.7 across 290+ G2 reviews reflects genuine enthusiasm among people who have invested in learning it. Reviewers describe deep control and flexibility as the payoff.

Integration breadth plus an escape hatch

1,900+ connectors covers most needs, and code nodes cover the rest. You are rarely blocked outright, which is not true of every automation platform.

n8n cons and limitations

The learning curve is real and specific

Reviewers report that n8n assumes comfort with webhooks, API authentication, JSON structures and workflow execution concepts. The split in feedback is consistent: power users on higher plans love the flexibility, newcomers on the starter tier struggle with the ramp-up.

Who it affects: non-technical teams, and anyone expecting a Zapier-like onboarding. What to do: be honest about who will maintain these workflows. If the answer is "someone in operations who has never seen JSON," choose a simpler tool.

Self-hosting transfers real work to you

Free software still requires a server sized for your concurrency, a database, backups, monitoring, TLS and upgrades — plus somebody responsible when a queue backs up outside working hours.

What to do: compare Cloud's €20 or €50 a month against your infrastructure bill plus the hours spent operating it. At small scale, those hours usually exceed the subscription. Choose self-hosting for data residency or capability, not to save money.

Support is community-based on open source

Reviewers note the absence of professional support on the open-source edition, with heavy reliance on the community for troubleshooting. That is a reasonable trade for free software, but it should be a deliberate one.

Scaling, version control and edge cases draw criticism

Reviewers report issues with scaling, version control and edge-case performance. Trustpilot sits at 3.2 against G2's 4.7, and the gap tracks the same divide — people who invested and people who bounced off.

What to evaluate: build your most awkward workflow first, including error handling and retries, and confirm how you will version it before it matters.

What do n8n users say?

SourceRatingReviews behind it
G24.7 / 5290+
Trustpilot3.2 / 5Not verified

Positive themes: unlimited steps per workflow; free and unlimited self-hosting; open source; 1,900+ integrations; flexibility for genuinely complex automation.

Negative themes: steep learning curve and setup effort; reliance on community support; scaling, version control and edge-case performance concerns.

The divide is the clearest signal here, and it is not a contradiction. n8n rewards investment and punishes casual adoption. Which side of that you land on is predictable in advance — it depends entirely on who will own the workflows.

n8n pricing in 2026

Read from n8n's pricing page, checked September 26, 2026. n8n publishes cloud prices in euros; figures are monthly equivalents billed annually and are not currency-converted here.

PlanMonthly, billed annuallyExecutions/monthConcurrencyNotable inclusions

An illustrative sizing check. Pro quadruples Starter's executions for 2.5× the price, making it the best value per execution in the published range. Business, by contrast, is 13× Pro for 4× the executions — so nobody should buy it for volume. It sells governance: SSO, Git version control and environments. Where Jet Admin fits alongside n8n

These are complementary rather than competing. n8n is a workflow engine: it decides what happens when an event fires. Jet Admin is an application layer: it gives people a place to review records, approve exceptions and act on what automations produced.

Most operational processes need both. A nightly sync and an enrichment pipeline are n8n jobs; the queue where someone approves the exceptions is not.

Because both usually stay in the stack, do not model replacing n8n as a saving. The one genuine interaction worth testing: workflows that exist only to copy records somewhere a human can read them are pure execution cost, and some of those become unnecessary once the data has a proper interface. Verify that against your own workflow list rather than assuming it.

When to keep n8n unchanged

If your automations are machine-to-machine, or you self-host for data-residency reasons, n8n's model is hard to beat and there is nothing here to substitute for it. Its per-run pricing is especially favourable for complex workflows that step-metered competitors would charge heavily for.

Who should use n8n — and who should compare alternatives?

Good fit: developers and technical operators; complex multi-step workflows; teams with data-residency requirements; anyone whose step-metered automation bill has become uncomfortable.

Compare alternatives if: the person maintaining workflows is non-technical; you need professional support from day one; your automations are simple and low-volume; or you want an interface for people as well as a pipeline.

If what you actually need is somewhere for colleagues to act on the records your automations touch, build that on your existing data with Jet Admin and keep n8n for the pipeline.

n8n review FAQ

What is n8n?

A workflow automation platform with a visual builder, around 1,900 integrations and the option to run on n8n Cloud or your own infrastructure.

Is n8n free?

The Community Edition is free to self-host with no vendor execution limit. Cloud plans start at €20 per month billed annually. Free software still carries hosting and maintenance costs.

How does n8n count executions?

One execution per workflow run, regardless of how many steps it contains or how much data it processes. Complexity does not increase the bill; frequency does.

Is n8n hard to learn?

Reviewers consistently describe a steep learning curve, noting that it assumes comfort with webhooks, API authentication and JSON. Newcomers report struggling where power users report loving it.

Does n8n charge per user?

No. Unlimited users are included on the paid cloud plans, which differentiates it from seat-based automation tools.

Is self-hosting cheaper than Cloud?

Only if you already have infrastructure and operational capacity. Price the server, database, backups, monitoring and staff time before comparing against €20 or €50 a month.

Decide who will own the workflows

Almost every negative n8n review traces back to one question being answered optimistically: who maintains this? If that person is comfortable with APIs and JSON, n8n's flexibility and pricing model are genuinely excellent. If not, a simpler tool will serve you better regardless of the per-execution maths.

And if the workflows on your list are mostly moving data so somebody can look at it, give that data an interface with Jet Admin and see which schedules you can retire.
